Wikinews interviews U.S. Green Party presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney

Friday, March 7, 2008

Wikinews held an exclusive interview with Cynthia McKinney, one of the candidates for the Green Party nomination for the 2008 U.S. presidential election.

McKinney is a former Democratic Congresswoman from Georgia. She was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1992 and held her seat for ten years until being defeated by Denise Majette in 2002. She was the first ever African American woman from her state to be elected to Congress.

We asked her why she made the recent switch to the Green Party. She replied, “Due to the importance of environmental issues, Green issues are the issues of today. The Ten Key Values ofthe Green Party stress us getting along with each other in harmony with the planet that gives us life.”

When asked about how she would handle Iraq she replied, “I would instruct the Joint Chiefs to draw up a plan for the orderly withdrawal of all U.S. troops from the country. I would dismantle our military bases in the area, and I would also demand that U.S. andother international corporations relinquish any claims to Iraqi oil orother resources and withdraw as well.”

McKinney is running for president because, basically, she thinks that “it’s time that the people win”.

Sam Brownback on running for President, gay rights, the Middle East and religion

Sam Brownback is perplexed. The U.S. Senator from Kansas and Presidential candidate is a Republican whose politics—he is against marriage for gay people, he is against abortion, and he has a clean image in a party tainted by scandal—should speak favorably to the party’s base. But it has not. “I’m baffled by that myself,” Senator Brownback told Wikinews reporter David Shankbone. “We haven’t been able to raise money.”

A recent poll in Iowa has put him in eighth place, with 2% supporting his campaign. “If we don’t finish fourth or better in Iowa…we’ll pull out.”

Senator Brownback’s relationship with God infuses almost every answer you find below. Although he doesn’t feel “competent” to explain why God would dislike gays, he does feel strongly that allowing two men or two women to enter into the union of marriage will destroy it for heterosexuals. Pointing to the research of Stanley Kurtz at the Hoover Institution, Brownback asserts that Northern Europeans have “taken the sacredness out of the institution.”

In the interview, Senator Brownback discusses the tug-and-pull that befalls him when his constituents show up at his office and say, “Look, I’m a conservative, but we need this bridge, we need this subsidy, we need this hospital.” Brownback feels this spending system needs to be changed; however, when it comes to energy policy, Brownback is there for his constituents. David Shankbone asked the Kansas Senator, a supporter of cellulosic ethanol, why he doesn’t support the lowering of tariffs on sugar since sugar ethanol delivers 8 times the energy output of cellulosic ethanol. Brazil, in particular, has become energy independent because of its sugar ethanol program. It’s cheaper to produce, and there is vastly more bang for the buck in sugar fuel than in corn fuel; an entire country no longer needs to import oil because of it. Federal tariffs currently make sugar ethanol too expensive in the United States. “You’re going to kill the ethanol industry here just as it gets going,” was Senator Brownback’s response. However, there is a debate over whether the process to make corn ethanol uses more energy than the ethanol itself produces.

Below is David Shankbone’s interview with Senator Sam Brownback.

The Importance Of User Experience In Web Design Jacksonville Fl

The importance of user experience in web design Jacksonville FL

by

Robertson Ted

Its tough doing business on the web, especially when you are just starting. You are faced with stiff competition from other entrepreneurs in your line of business. The first few months are so tough that most startups go belly up without earning a single dollar in profit. The dismal performances by new online businesses can be traced to several factors. Ineffective web design Jacksonville FL is one of these factors and it pays no attention to customers\’ user experience. A website, it goes without saying, is the platform on which an online business connects with its customers. It is well accepted in the online business community that the quality of a website has a bearing on the fortunes of the business behind it. Unfortunately, many entrepreneurs are yet to come to terms with this fact.

What exactly do we mean by user experience and why is it so important in web design Jacksonville FL? We can think of user experience as the ease with which customers can find what they are looking for in your website. People bring certain expectations to your website. They have needs and they expect to satisfy these needs by shopping on your website. Customers therefore browse your website with the hopes of finding answers to their problems.

Many entrepreneurs and their web design Jacksonville FL teams are however yet to grasp the importance of user experience. Most will focus more on creating elegant websites that incorporate brilliant design techniques. In fact, many entrepreneurs use elegant design as a competitive tool. We as such have plenty of dashing websites out there that aren\’t making much money yet not-so-cute websites are doing brisk business. Why? The answer is in the user experience. If you want your business to sell, you must make the shopping experience easy and enjoyable so that customers don\’t have a reason to leave your website before they place orders.

Web design Jacksonville FL must take user experience into account. This does not mean that a web designer should do away with elegant design. The important thing is to make sure that customers will have a satisfying experience on the website – which will make them stay longer and come back in future for more shopping.

Creating powerful user experience takes a lot of planning and careful design and it\’s not easy to dissect the entire anatomy of a well built retail website. However, some things do stand out. For example, a retail site must be easy to navigate. Customers are readily put off by cumbersome multilevel links and back buttons. The checkout procedure of a retail website is another area where web design Jacksonville FL fails. Customers don\’t need mind-numbing procedures when all they are trying to do is place an order. People will browse such a website, absorb all the information they want, and then proceed to buy from a different website where they find the ordering much easier. The shopping cart should be simple and intuitive – no need to frustrate customers who have spent the past thirty minutes checking out your products.

Should You Undergo Cosmetic Surgery?

by

Heather P. Knight

Are you a female who is regularly concerned with your appearance? Beauty is an issue that many women, just like you, deal with, often on a daily basis. If you are unsatisfied with the way that you look or the way that you feel, you may have thought about cosmetic surgery. Although cosmetic surgery has helped to improve the physical appearance of many women, cosmetic surgery isn t right for everyone.

When it comes to determining if cosmetic surgery is right for you, there are a number of important factors to consider. One of those factors is the cost. It is no secret that cosmetic surgery is expensive. The larger the area you need repaired, the more costly your surgery is likely to be. With that in mind, if cosmetic surgery is needed for medical purposes, like to repair skin damage, your health insurance may cover all or a portion of the costs. If you will be responsible for the costs of cosmetic surgery, all on your own, it is important to make sure that you can afford to do so, without putting yourself in debt.

Another factor that you will need to take into consideration is the time that you have to devote to cosmetic surgery. Unfortunately, this is a factor that many individuals do not take into consideration when first examining cosmetic surgery. Most cosmetic surgeries require a few days worth of rest and follow-up care. This may mean that you are unable to return to work right away. It is important that you are able to get the appropriate amount of time off from work, particularly without creating any issues that may cost you your job. Also, if you will miss a week or more worth of work, it is important to take your financial loss for that time period into consideration.

Another one of the many factors that should be examined, when examining cosmetic surgery, is that of the surgery type. Cosmetic surgery includes a number of different procedures. Popular cosmetic procedures include those that remove wrinkles, repair skin damage, such as burns, reduce or increase the size of breasts, as well as reshape or restructure the nose. As previously stated, the cost of your cosmetic surgery may all depend on the areas of your body which you would like improved. It may also have an impact on which cosmetic surgeons in your area can perform the work for you.

Speaking of finding a cosmetic surgeon, this is an important decision. The decision as to which cosmetic surgeon you would like to use the services of is a decision that should not be made on a whim. When searching for a cosmetic surgeon, it is advised that you examine areas of expertise. While most cosmetic surgeons are able to perform a wide range of surgeries, there are some who have specialties, like breast enlargements or breast reductions or facelifts. Of course, there are no guarantees, but you are more likely to see success when using the services of a cosmetic surgeon that specializes in the procedure in which you would like to undergo.

As a reminder, cosmetic surgery can help to improve your appearance, which can have a whole set of other benefits all on its own, but it isn t for everyone. With that in mind, if your physical appearance is an issue that you regularly have to deal with, it may be best to schedule a consultation appointment with a cosmetic surgeon in or around your area.

Npt Threads}

NPT Threads

by

Teres DifeoThe National Pipe Thread standard is a norm that is enforced in the USA for the threading that is done on pipes, tubes and pipe fittings. This norm ensures that the threads are of the right depth, spacing and tapering pattern and also angle correctly to ensure proper fitting when they are tightened.

The distance between the threads is also specified and it is measured in fractions of an inch. The smallest is 1/8 while the largest is 2 inches of separation between the threads. The small thread designs are used for pipes that convey compressed air or gases while larger sizes are suited for pipes that are used in water and waste management systems. The sealing of pipes depends heavily on the efficiency and accuracy of the threading, hence safe and economical transportation of materials can be done.

One issue that emerges in maintaining the correct NPT threading norms is the thickness and dimensions of the pipe itself. Often there may be minor mistakes in the specifications which lead to variations in the threads and this can result in large errors when pipes are connected. Hence it is essential to conform to the NPT norms very strictly.

The angle of threading has to be constantly maintained at 60 degrees to ensure standardization across the industry and also ensure that all other pipe fittings like clamps, connectors and valves are of a similar, matching angle. The pattern of threads is known as the Seller’s design with a recurring pattern of continuous raised peaks and lowered indentations. Tapered and parallel designs are also available in threading patterns. The parallel design has several parallel rings running round the outer or inner diameter of the pipe or tube, while the tapered design is in a spiral shape of higher and lower diameter along the surface.

In general the thread pattern runs in a right-handed direction. However, left-handed patterns are also available for special requirements and these are designated clearly on the label of the pipe or hose.

Other countries like the UK and Germany have their own thread standardization norms. In the UK it is known as the British Standard Pipe or BSP while in Germany it is known by the German term panzergerwinde. Both these sets of standards are enforceable throughout the world and the manufacturers must specify which standardization pattern they are following, as there are some minor differences between them.

Former Pennsylvania Governor George Leader dies aged 95

Friday, May 10, 2013

George M. Leader, former Governor of the U.S. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, died in Hershey, Pennsylvania yesterday at the age of 95.

Leader’s death, at a retirement community he and his wife founded in 1985, comes after the former governor suffered a short illness. The community’s spokeswoman, Kelly S. Kuntz, announced Leader’s death.

Leader was born in York County, Pennsylvania in 1918. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 1939, he joined his father’s poultry business. Shortly thereafter, in World War II, Leader served as an ensign in the U.S. Navy.

After serving in the State Senate for four years, Leader, a Democrat, was elected Governor of Pennsylvania in the 1954 election. Sworn-in in 1955, he served as Governor until 1959.

Upon taking office at the age of 37, Leader became the second-youngest Governor of Pennsylvania behind Robert E. Pattison, who was 32 years old at his 1883 inauguration.

Current Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett mandated state flags be flown at half staff until the evening of Leader’s burial. Corbett also praised Leader, describing him as someone who “defied political labels and conventional thinking in his tireless work for Pennsylvania and its people.”

Former Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell also commented on Leader’s death, saying he would be remembered as “a man who cared very deeply about what happened around him.”
