The Queen City Of The Hudson Is A “Reed Covered Hut By The Water”

By Barbra I. Miller

Derived from the native term “Uppu-qui-ipis-in” which means “reed-covered hut by the water,” Poughkeepsie today has expanded beyond huts into a permanent community of some forty-three thousand souls. Poughkeepsie is actually the name of both a town and a city, both municipalities right next to one another because the city actually used to be the western part of the town (and, incidentally, was an independent village in its own right before that). Except for legal purposes, and such services as fire and police, the two communities are often viewed as one, with a combined population exceeding seventy-five thousand people. The town is actually home to much more people than the city, which counts only some thirty-thousand-plus citizens.

Thus, it’s expected that their respective real estate markets will be quite different. A closer examination of the latest demographical figures shows that the town is much more affluent than the city, with a median income of over fifty-five thousand dollars a year as opposed to well under thirty-thousand for the city. Indeed, the Town of Poughkeepsie is able to provide for its own emergency services, which are staffed by fully paid civil servants, and not volunteers as is the case with many a suburban community.

As for the City of Poughkeepsie, it’s been severely battered by the economic malaise afflicting the rest of the state and the country as a whole. Average listing price in the two-week period between January 20, 2010 and February 3, 2010 fell almost thirty thousand dollars, to two hundred and fifty-one thousand dollars, though almost five thousand of that has been “recovered” as of February 10. However, the actual median selling price, based on two hundred and thirty-four homes sold, is almost thirty-three thousand dollars short of the median listing price, at barely two hundred and twenty thousand. Average per square foot in the city cost one hundred and thirty-two dollars.

Poughkeepsie was once the “Queen City of the Hudson,” but has suffered economic setbacks for the past twenty-plus years and was just beginning to recover in fits and starts when the recent recessionary woes struck. This has obvious implications for local realty, both residential and commercial. The Town of Poughkeepsie, however, seems rather more vibrant in comparison. International Business Machines, Incorporated, was once the most notable employer around, and while the company still maintains a campus in town, most of its production has been moved elsewhere. Vassar College in the City of Poughkeepsie is arguably the most notable employer now.

Should you purchase any Poughkeepsie property? Well, there’s no way it’s reclaiming its glory days, so the local real estate market is never going to be a hot one. But if your goals are more modest, and especially if you live in the city yourself, of course, Poughkeepsie property can be a solid investment.

Building partially collapses in New York City’s Upper West Side

Thursday, July 14, 2005

A building being prepared for demolition collapsed this morning in New York‘s Upper West Side around 9 a.m. EDT. Five people are known to be injured from the accident, as well as one rescue worker who was injured in the aftermath. None of the injuries were life-threatening.

The building was a supermarket, which was being taken down to make room for a high-rise building, something that residents took issue with. The roof, front wall, and scaffolding all fell to the ground, as stated by Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta.

Soon after the incident at least 100 police and fire department personnel combed the wreckage for more victims, using search and rescue dogs to find people by scent. They quickly accounted for the twenty-five construction workers who were working on the supermarket. Most of the victims’ injuries were broken bones, including one person who broke all four extremities.

Subway lines 1, 2, and 3 have been closed or redirected in response, along with the M104 bus.

Dog falls on car and kills driver in Michigan

Thursday, January 19, 2006

A dog fell off an Interstate 96 overpass in Livonia, Michigan killing 81 year-old Charles G. Jetchick.

Jetchick and a passenger, who police would not identify, were transported to St. Mary’s Hospital where Jetchick died from his injuries. The passenger suffered only minor injuries.

Police say that the 60 to 70 pound (27-32 kilograms) dog was not thrown off the overpass, but “probably fell by accident while trying to avoid a car,” Sgt. Michael A. Shaw of the Michigan State Police said. “We don’t know and thats why we are looking for witnesses.”

The dog, which fell about 16 feet (5 metres) also died due to its injuries.

Shaw has been with the State Police for 11 years and has never encountered a similar incident. “We’ve had rocks and other stuff like that fall off of overpasses. This would be the first dog we’ve had,” said Shaw.

Edmund White on writing, incest, life and Larry Kramer

Thursday, November 8, 2007

What you are about to read is an American life as lived by renowned author Edmund White. His life has been a crossroads, the fulcrum of high-brow Classicism and low-brow Brett Easton Ellisism. It is not for the faint. He has been the toast of the literary elite in New York, London and Paris, befriending artistic luminaries such as Salman Rushdie and Sir Ian McKellen while writing about a family where he was jealous his sister was having sex with his father as he fought off his mother’s amorous pursuit.

The fact is, Edmund White exists. His life exists. To the casual reader, they may find it disquieting that someone like his father existed in 1950’s America and that White’s work is the progeny of his intimate effort to understand his own experience.

Wikinews reporter David Shankbone understood that an interview with Edmund White, who is professor of creative writing at Princeton University, who wrote the seminal biography of Jean Genet, and who no longer can keep track of how many sex partners he has encountered, meant nothing would be off limits. Nothing was. Late in the interview they were joined by his partner Michael Caroll, who discussed White’s enduring feud with influential writer and activist Larry Kramer.

Frequently Asked Questions About Opossums And Animal Control In Columbus Oh

byadmin

If you’ve noticed opossums on your property and you don’t want them around, contact an experienced company that specializes in Animal control in Columbus OH. Below you’ll find the answers to frequently asked questions about opossums, humane removal and how to keep them away.

Q.) Are opossums dangerous and do they attack people?

A.) Although you may think that opossums look scary, these animals aren’t a threat to you or your family. These nocturnal animals are afraid of you too and they only act aggressive if they feel threatened. If you scare an opossum, many times the animal will act as if it’s dead. Even though an opossum won’t hurt you, they can be a nuisance and cause damage to your property. If you have opossums in your house or in your yard, you should have them removed by a company that performs Animal control in Columbus OH.

Q.) What will an animal control company do when I call them for Opossum Removal?

A.) A company that performs animal control will remove the animal as humanely as possible. A trap is baited and placed in the area where the animal travels. After catching the animal in the trap, the animal control company will release the animal in a safe location away from your home.

Q.) Is there anything that can be done to keep opossums away?

A.) Opossums come out at night to look for food, so to keep them away, you shouldn’t leave food or garbage outside overnight. These animals often find cat or dog food that’s left outside for your pets. After your pet is finished eating, bring any remaining food indoors. Keep your garbage inside of a metal or plastic container that has a secure lid. If you have trees in your yard that bear fruit, regularly pick up fallen fruit that’s on the ground.

If you have nuisance animals in your home or on your property, contact the The Wildlife Control Company to humanely trap the animal for you. Visit their website at yourohiowildlifepro.com to learn more about their services and to contact the company.

Austrian Airlines cancels Moscow-bound flight after Russia refuses a reroute outside Belarusian airspace

Saturday, May 29, 2021

Austrian Airlines cancelled cargo-passenger flight OS601 from Vienna bound for Moscow’s Domodedovo Airport on Thursday after authorities in Russia refused to accept a new proposed route to its capital city which bypassed Belarusian airspace.

Following the grounding of a Ryanair flight on Sunday from Greece to Lithuania; in Minsk, Belarus, over a bomb scare and subsequent arrest of opposition journalist Roman Protasevich and his girlfriend Sofia Sapega, the European Union imposed sanctions on Belarus. Many air carriers in Europe including Austrian Airlines have been avoiding to fly over the Belarusian airspace and using Belarusian airports after sanctions were imposed.

An Austrian Airlines official told TASS, because it “has suspended flights over Belarusian airspace until further notice […] it is also necessary to adjust the flight route from Vienna to Moscow. The change in the flight path must be approved by the authorities. Russian officials did not give their approval to us.”

The representative cited a recommendation by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). A recommendation published in a Safety Information Bulletin by the aviation body dated May 25 stated: EASA operators are to “avoid operations in FIR [Flight Information Region] Minsk” unless its use is “deemed necessary”, and third country operators “authorised by EASA” do the same “when conducting operations to, from and within the EU” until an international investigation into Protasevich’s arrest hasn’t completed.

According to The Guardian, Air France was also following an EASA recommendation, and cancelled a flight from Paris to Moscow for the second consecutive day. It was denied permission on Wednesday. Air France has cancelled at least four flights from Paris to Moscow, the BBC reported. An Austrian Airlines cargo flight in Nanjing, China bound for Vienna was also grounded over similar concerns.

The Guardian reported KLM and British Airways had modified routes approved. Along with those air carriers, RT also listed LOT Polish Airlines’s modified routes were also approved.

The Foreign Ministry of Austria called Russia’s position “absolutely incomprehensible to us”, adding, according to Deutsche Welle, that all flights bound for and over Russia should be able to continue without hindrance. According to Interfax, when asked by journalists, Russian Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov said “[t]he presidential administration is not in charge of controlling air traffic” and advised the question be posed to “our aviation authorities”.

The United Nations International Civil Aviation Organization held an “exceptional session” Thursday on the initial grounding, The Guardian reported. Belarus is accused of violating the 1944 Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation, to which it is a signatory.

According to a May 25 BBC article, European airlines KLM, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines and Finnair announced their suspension of flights over Belarusian airspace. LOT Polish Airlines suspended flights to and from Minsk, and Ukraine banned all carriers from flying over or into Belarus. Singapore Airlines declared rerouting its flights as well.

Belarus’ national carrier Belavia has been the subject of many cancellations, including a suspension of its operating permit in the United Kingdom and its suspension of eleven routes to EU cities and one to the Russian city Kaliningrad. Belavia also suspended flights to France and the UK until October 30, the BBC reported.

Nokia Inc. announces plans for iPhone rival

Thursday, August 30, 2007

Announced early Wednesday morning at Nokia’s GoEvent, in a plan to expand the company’s revenue, Finland-based company Nokia Inc. is developing a mobile phone similar to its rival iPhone, which will be available in the near future for Nokia customers. The phone is expected to be available by 2008.

Most of the features are the same as the iPhone’s. They include music, games, and many other features, even ones that the iPhone may not have. Ovi (in Finnish meaning “Door”) will be the door for more than 2 million songs and games available for download on the new device. Users will be able to download wirelessly in their own home or anywhere there is access to a computer.

But this is not the first time Nokia has made an attempt like this to increase its revenue. In October of 2003 the company revealed the N-Gage, a game-playing cell phone, but was “stocked-out” due to poor sales. The N95 smartphone, which was released in the U.S. on April 7, 2007 (before the iPhone on June 29, 2007) includes WiFi, a GPS, a music player, and a 5 megapixel digital camera. The three other phones that were revealed at the event in London will be in-stock next quarter. The new N81 and the modified N95 smartphones were among the revealed at yesterday’s event; the N81 is a new member to Nokia’s smartphone family; the N95 has been modified by having more memory and a sleeker LCD screen.

When Nokia was asked about the striking similarity between this and the iPhone, Nokia’s Executive Vice President and General Manager of Multimedia, Anssi Vanjoki, said, “If there is something good in the world then we copy with pride.”

Nokia first demoed their iPhone rival August 29th. During their demo they omitted the fact that the demo was for the software to be in use, not the actual hardware.[1]

Ingrid Newkirk, co-founder of PETA, on animal rights and the film about her life

Tuesday, November 20, 2007

Last night HBO premiered I Am An Animal: The Story of Ingrid Newkirk and PETA. Since its inception, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has made headlines and raised eyebrows. They are almost single-handedly responsible for the movement against animal testing and their efforts have raised the suffering animals experience in a broad spectrum of consumer goods production and food processing into a cause célèbre.

PETA first made headlines in the Silver Spring monkeys case, when Alex Pacheco, then a student at George Washington University, volunteered at a lab run by Edward Taub, who was testing neuroplasticity on live monkeys. Taub had cut sensory ganglia that supplied nerves to the monkeys’ fingers, hands, arms, legs; with some of the monkeys, he had severed the entire spinal column. He then tried to force the monkeys to use their limbs by exposing them to persistent electric shock, prolonged physical restraint of an intact arm or leg, and by withholding food. With footage obtained by Pacheco, Taub was convicted of six counts of animal cruelty—largely as a result of the monkeys’ reported living conditions—making them “the most famous lab animals in history,” according to psychiatrist Norman Doidge. Taub’s conviction was later overturned on appeal and the monkeys were eventually euthanized.

PETA was born.

In the subsequent decades they ran the Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty against Europe’s largest animal-testing facility (footage showed staff punching beagle puppies in the face, shouting at them, and simulating sex acts while taking blood samples); against Covance, the United State’s largest importer of primates for laboratory research (evidence was found that they were dissecting monkeys at its Vienna, Virginia laboratory while the animals were still alive); against General Motors for using live animals in crash tests; against L’Oreal for testing cosmetics on animals; against the use of fur for fashion and fur farms; against Smithfield Foods for torturing Butterball turkeys; and against fast food chains, most recently against KFC through the launch of their website kentuckyfriedcruelty.com.

They have launched campaigns and engaged in stunts that are designed for media attention. In 1996, PETA activists famously threw a dead raccoon onto the table of Anna Wintour, the fur supporting editor-in-chief of Vogue, while she was dining at the Four Seasons in New York, and left bloody paw prints and the words “Fur Hag” on the steps of her home. They ran a campaign entitled Holocaust on your Plate that consisted of eight 60-square-foot panels, each juxtaposing images of the Holocaust with images of factory farming. Photographs of concentration camp inmates in wooden bunks were shown next to photographs of caged chickens, and piled bodies of Holocaust victims next to a pile of pig carcasses. In 2003 in Jerusalem, after a donkey was loaded with explosives and blown up in a terrorist attack, Newkirk sent a letter to then-PLO leader Yasser Arafat to keep animals out of the conflict. As the film shows, they also took over Jean-Paul Gaultier‘s Paris boutique and smeared blood on the windows to protest his use of fur in his clothing.

The group’s tactics have been criticized. Co-founder Pacheco, who is no longer with PETA, called them “stupid human tricks.” Some feminists criticize their campaigns featuring the Lettuce Ladies and “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” ads as objectifying women. Of their Holocaust on a Plate campaign, Anti-Defamation League Chairman Abraham Foxman said “The effort by PETA to compare the deliberate systematic murder of millions of Jews to the issue of animal rights is abhorrent.” (Newkirk later issued an apology for any hurt it caused). Perhaps most controversial amongst politicians, the public and even other animal rights organizations is PETA’s refusal to condemn the actions of the Animal Liberation Front, which in January 2005 was named as a terrorist threat by the United States Department of Homeland Security.

David Shankbone attended the pre-release screening of I Am An Animal at HBO’s offices in New York City on November 12, and the following day he sat down with Ingrid Newkirk to discuss her perspectives on PETA, animal rights, her responses to criticism lodged against her and to discuss her on-going life’s work to raise human awareness of animal suffering. Below is her interview.
