High school football coach shot dead at school gym in Iowa

Wednesday, June 24, 2009

An American football coach has been shot at his school gym in Iowa, United States. Ed Thomas was shot in front of his students at around 8.00 am local time. Thomas was in the weight room at the time of the shooting. An adult male has been arrested suspected of his murder.

Thomas was the head football coach at Aplington-Parkersburg High School. He had coached 37 seasons of High School football in his career and has a career record of 292-84 of which 156-31 is with Aplington-Parkersburg. He led Parkersburg to 19 state playoffs and won state titles in 1993 and 2001. He was named NFL High School Coach of the Year in 2003 and previously coached four active NFL players including Brad Meester, Jared DeVries, Casey Wiegmann and Aaron Kampman.

Thomas was well known in the local community for his work. When Parkersburg was hit by a tornado in the summer of 2008 Thomas worked endlessly to restore the damaged football field. County Sheriff Jason Johnson said that “Coach Thomas is the pillar of the community. Anything that affects him affects Parkersburg.”

No students were injured during the shooting.

Egyptian doctor sentenced to fifteen years jail, 1,500 lashes in Saudi Arabia

Friday, November 14, 2008

Raouf Amin el-Araby, a 52-year-old Egyptian doctor who has been serving the Saudi Royal family for 20 years, was convicted of malpractice. Egyptian newspapers reported that he was accused of driving a Saudi princess “to addiction”, reportedly after treating a Saudi princess with painkillers.

Initially sentenced to 7 years and 700 lashes, he has been sentenced to 15 years and 1500 lashes, 70 a week, after making an appeal.

Family members, friends and colleagues gathered in outrage and grief outside the headquarters of Egypt’s doctors union, calling upon King Abdullah to pardon Raouf. “1,500 lashes is unprecedented in the history of Islam,” read one banner carried by protesters. “Who is responsible for the humiliation of our doctors abroad?” read another.

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) and the foreign minister are working hard to find a way to return Raouf home quickly. Hafez Abu Saeda, the director of EOHR, stated that the princess was prescribed the same medication that she was receiving in the United States, “so it is obvious that the doctor was not at fault for her addiction.”

Abu Saeda was astonished that the judge doubled the sentence and the lashes after the appeal. It is tantamount, he said, to penalizing Amin for asserting his right of appeal. “When you appeal against a sentencing it is the rule that it cannot go higher, but in Saudi Arabia it appears anything is possible,” said Saeda.

Protests in Egypt have driven the Egyptian foreign ministry to seek a solution, partly out of concern that negative repercussions may damage relations between Cairo and Riyadh.

A human rights lawyer said that he was given the first 70 lashes last week and he will get 70 more this week.

Benefits Of A Short Term Loan

Benefits of a Short Term Loan

by

Gareth Williamson

It s been suggested recently that personal debt stands at an astonishing 1455 billion in the UK. This figure is spread across a wide range of borrowing types from student loans and car finance to credit cards. But with the average UK household owing approximately 57,000, including mortgage payments, it s easy to see why people are looking for short-term alternatives.

Long term loans are traditionally used for large amounts or to give the borrower more flexibility. However, there are also disadvantages to this type of loan. These disadvantages have seen the amount of short term loans being taken out rise dramatically in the last few years. Here, we explain why the short term loan is so popular by outlining its benefits.

Quick response

With a shorter loan repayment period, you re likely to get a quicker response to your request. By avoiding the main high street banks and going straight to a company where you will be able to get loan approval in just a short space of time. If you need a quick response, and money for a fast approaching deadline – the short term loan could be just the right thing.

Cash on the hip

Short term loans don t have to go into your bank account. The money you need can be lost through charges, bills and overdrafts that way. Instead, you can apply for a cash loan that will be delivered to your door and one that you re free to use in any way you like.

Short payback period

A short term loan means a short term payback. So, why is that good? Doesn t it mean I have to pay it all back before I can afford it? Of course not. By taking a shorter repayment period, you ll end up debt-free in a much quicker and more efficient way.

Less interest

Although you may technically be charged a higher APR than if you took a longer loan, the actual cost to you will be far less. Instead of racking up mounting interest charges every month for the next five years, you can pay off what you agreed to and get back to earning interest on your credit rather than paying it on your debt.

Bad credit

One of the most flexible types of personal finance, the short term loan is also available to people with a bad credit rating. Even if you ve been refused a loan because of your credit, you can often get approved for short term finance that won t burden you with long term debts that you ll struggle to pay off.

American pop star Whitney Houston dies at 48

Sunday, February 12, 2012

American pop star Whitney Houston was found dead Saturday at the Beverly Hilton Hotel according to the Beverly Hills Police Department. She was 48 years old. Houston’s most famous songs included How Will I Know, I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me) and I Will Always Love You. She was known for her tumultuous marriage to fellow singer Bobby Brown and her public battles with drug and alcohol abuse.

Paramedics and police responded to a 9-1-1 call and came to Houston’s room at the Beverly Hilton. She was found unresponsive and unconscious. They attempted to perform CPR but were unable to revive her. She was pronounced dead at 3:55 pm local time (2355 UTC). There were no immediate signs that foul play was involved.

Houston’s substance abuse problems came into public view after a 2002 interview with ABC News reporter Diane Sawyer. After a recent arrest at a Hawaiian airport, Houston went into detail about her drugs of choice. However, she said that she drew the line at crack cocaine saying, “Crack is cheap. I make too much money to ever smoke crack. Let’s get that straight. OK? We don’t do crack. We don’t do that. Crack is wack.”

Houston is survived by her only daughter Bobbi Kristina.

Crowd in Derbyshire, UK, encourages teenager to commit suicide

Sunday, October 5, 2008

It has recently been made public that on September 27, seventeen year old Shaun Dykes jumped off a multistory building following encouragement from the crowd. According to the BBC’s Today programme, a variety of different people, including youths and middle aged citizens, were telling the teenager to jump.

Alasdair Kay, director of the Derby City Mission, saw the incident unfold. He expressed his shock and disgust at the incident. “People were filming… we could hear people shouting ‘[J]ump, you,'” she said. “They weren’t all just young people, some were middle-aged. To be honest with you I was sickened.”

Should the people encouraging the teen to jump face prosecution?

Derbyshire’s Chief Constable Mick Creedon, also yesterday commented on the indent. “The tragic death of Shaun Dykes at Derby on 27th September has attracted much comment and media speculation,” he started. “The pain that Shaun’s family and friends are suffering must be unimaginable and they have my deepest sympathy.”

“The primary responsibility of the police is the protection of life, and the Derbyshire Constabulary will always have this responsibility at the forefront of our response to such tragic events as Shaun’s death last Saturday,” he continued. “We have very well trained and experienced staff, well practiced in dealing with such incidents and I have no doubt that the officers involved in talking to Shaun on Saturday did their best with the situation they were presented with.”

“The fact that they were unsuccessful in negotiating Shaun to safety will have been very painful for them, particularly for the two officers who spent two hours talking directly to him. They have my sincere thanks for their efforts as, I’m sure, they have the thanks of the vast majority of those reading this.”

Shaun Dykes, had been raised in a single parent family in a village near Derbyshire and he recently returned from a business course to study to become an accountant or a pilot.

Before his death, he was working part time in a local pub. Craig Doxey, his best friend, described Dykes. “He was always smiling and laughing about stuff. I think if it wasn’t for the crowd, Shaun would have got down and got some help from all his mates, work colleagues and the police.”

He went to Heanor Gate Science College, and he was openly gay. According to one of his friends from that school, Rebkha Minkley, “he always came in, in the morning with a smile on his face.”

According to the Today program, Dykes is believed to have left a suicide note before jumping off the building.

Honda Civic tops Canada’s list of most stolen cars

Wednesday, November 22, 2006

The 1999 and 2000 year model Honda Civic SiR tops the list of Canada’s most stolen cars.

Consumer popularity also assures the cars will be popular with thieves. Its the second year in a row the Honda SiR has topped the list.

Rick Dubin Vice President of Investigations for the Insurance Bureau of Canada said “The Civics are easy targets.”

Dubin said that once stolen, the cars are most often sold to “chop shops” where thieves completely dismantle the vehicles. The automobile’s individual parts are worth more than the entire car.

The sheer numbers of the cars and their lack of theft deterrent systems make them thieves’ preferred choices.

1999 and 2000 Honda Civics do not come with an electronic immobilizer, however all Hondas from 2001 and onward are equipped with an immobilizer. Immobilizers will be mandatory on all new cars sold beginning September 2007. The devices enable an engine computer to recognize an electronic code in the key. If the code in the key and the engine don’t match exactly, the vehicle can’t be started.

In third place was the 2004 Subaru Impreza, while the 1999 Acura Integra came in fourth, with the 1994 Honda Civic rounding out the top five.

In sixth place, the 1998 Acura Integra, and the 1993 Dodge Shadow completed seventh.

When asked why early model vehicles are selected, he said that, “auto thieves continue to find it easier to steal older vehicles lacking an IBC-approved immobilizer. We’ve seen this trend developing for several years, and these results confirm it.”

Another Honda automobile, the 1996 year model Civic filled eighth place, with the 2000 German Audi TT Quattro in ninth.

The American 1996 Chevrolet/GMC Blazer rounded out the top ten.

None of the above cars had an electronic immobilizer.

Uses Of Airbrushing

By Stewart Wrighter

Airbrushing is a relatively new way of painting that has gained popularity in a variety of places in the last few decades. The first exposure people might have had to the art was in resort locations where t-shirts were airbrushed with scenery and names. This method of painting has experienced resurgence in popularity and the method is also used in other places. It is literally painting with air and paint. The metal paint gun is used and air blows through the tube of the bun, gathers paint, and sprays it onto the materials onto which the artist is painting. It takes practice to perfect the art of airbrush painting, but once a person has mastered it, the designs can be very elaborate and detailed.

One of the most popular uses for airbrush painting is on vehicles. The paint adheres well to the paint already on the car, so you get a strong base coat onto which you can paint. Airbrush designs can be applied to the car to make it personalized. People add names, quotes, and pictures to their cars, making them one-of-a-kind artistic masterpieces. This is a great way to take something that is not all that unique and turn it into something that is truly yours. It is an inexpensive way to customize a vehicle.

Another totally different option for airbrush painting is manicures and pedicures. Airbrush is used to apply painted designs to nails during the process. These are decorative additions to a traditional manicure. It is done after the base paint dries and can take varying amounts of time, depending on how elaborate the chosen designs are. Manicurists typically display a board of sample paintings from which clients can choose. Airbrush painting can be messy in a salon, so it is usually done out of the way of the rest of the work.

Airbrush tanning has become very popular in recent years. Instead of lying in the sun or in a tanning bed, people have their tan painted onto their bodies. The airbrush makes it possible to control the amount of paint applied to the body, so people can choose how dark they want their tan to be. Many airbrush tans use completely natural products that are safe for the skin and wash away over time.

Last but not least, airbrush painting on clothing is still popular. Kids love the look of personalized clothing and feel as if they have designed the pieces themselves. They can have clothing with pictures and words on them just be thinking up a design and telling the artist what they want. There are still stores and shops in malls across the country that personalizes items with airbrush designs. They make popular gifts for loved ones and are fun to own for your own use. Many adults remember the airbrush designs from when they were children and buy modern versions today to remind them of their youth. It is a great way to turn something bland into something unique and fun.

A compilation of brief news reports for Monday, May 7, 2007.

A 30 meter section of a gas pipeline in Luka (near Kiev) in Ukraine has been destroyed by an explosion. Although supplies to Europe via this pipeline have stopped, Ukrainian Energy Minister Georgi E. Boyko said that supplies to Europe would not be affected.

“There are no changes in volumes of gas being transported,” Yuri Korolchuk said. “Volumes due to pass through the damaged section are being redirected through the Soyuz pipeline.”

Normal flows are reported in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Romania.

Copper prices are rising. Between record copper imports from China, and a mining strike in Peru, the prices have climbed to over $8100 (United States dollars) a tonne, for a gain of $575 dollars over the last week. However the upward trend is not new, it has been climbing for quite some time. In April 2003, the price of copper was under $2000 a tonne.

The metal market has been tending up due to growth in the Chinese industrial production. This trickles down to the local level, where the buying price at scrap yards is ever climbing, making scrap metal collection a more profitable endeavour for individual people using pick up trucks or other such vehicles to collect and cash in the scrap metal at metal buying yards. It can be collected via agreements with businesses, from the garbage, or, sometimes, by theft.

Copper prices fell today on the NYMEX commodity exchange from US$3.7545 per pound to US$3.7125 based on the July futures contract.

School Software: 12 Tips To Create An Effective School Website

By Chris Carver

In today’s Internet savvy society, sophisticated school websites are increasingly becoming the norm. To stand out from the masses, a school website should have compelling content and visual appeal, be engaging and informative, and reflect the spirit and activities at the school. Creating an interactive online presence that appeals to parents, students, faculty, and the community encourages involvement, strengthens community and fosters loyalty. With the help of a school administration software program that includes a website content management feature, your school can achieve a secure, customized and user-friendly website. Below are a few tips to make your website compelling and effective:

1. Format:

Make sure your website font sizes and colors are easy to read. The style should be consistent throughout the entire website and look similar to standard school documents for consistency and brand recognition.

2. Homework Board:

Allow teachers to post homework assignments and class updates online. This offers parents a glimpse into their students’ coursework, while offering students access to assignments from missed classes.

3. School Supply List:

Post a list of items that students should have access to, whether in their backpacks, lockers, or at home. Leave the list posted all year long as a reference and update it as needed.

4. Student Project Showcase:

Show off your talented students by displaying impressive work such as a video report or a touching poem. This shows parents and the community the caliber of students at your school and offers students an added incentive of public recognition.

5. Parent Resources:

Equip parents with the latest education and parenting-related materials, from a class syllabus and student/parent handbook to recommended reading to a community directory. By communicating directly to parents and families, you will set the benchmark for bringing education from the classroom into the home.

6. Master Calendar:

Include a master calendar with school events that include sports games, back to school night, guest speakers, report card release dates, and more. Don’t forget to update the calendar regularly to drive parents and students back to your website for the latest news and information.

7. Contact Information:

Access to a list of teacher, administration and faculty email addresses is essential for open parent communication and relationship-building. The more engaged parents are, the more connected students will likely feel to their school and community.

8. Alumni Section:

Whether you are an elementary, middle or high school, you should include an alumni section to show the success of graduates who gained a valuable education from your school. This section can also serve as a forum for alumni to connect and show their support for school activities and fundraisers.

9. Pictures:

Nothing makes a website more personal than photographs, videos and podcasts of students and teachers who are enjoying their experiences at school. Parents and students alike will be eager to check back to your website frequently to view photos and recordings of classmates and teachers.

10. Online Registration:

Drive participation and support of school activities by offering parents, students and community members convenient online access to register for school plays, dances, events and other programs. With school registration software, this feature can easily be added to your site with secure registration and payment processing.

11. Online Store:

Offer parents and students an opportunity to shop online for everything from school t-shirts and supplies to event tickets and recommended books for sale.

12. Fundraising Tools:

Provide an online donation option for parents, community members and alumni to donate to school fundraisers while they’re on your site reviewing information, registering for an event or shopping at your online school store.

What’s important to remember when creating your school’s website is to explore school software systems that allow you to incorporate creative, interactive tools that drive parents and students to your site frequently, improve operational efficiencies, and foster community involvement and student, parent and teacher interaction.
