‘Worst song of all time’ becomes YouTube sensation

Wednesday, March 23, 2011

Friday, a song by US teen singer Rebecca Black, has gone viral after the song’s music video was uploaded onto video sharing website YouTube. The video has attracted over thirty-five million views since its February 10 upload — and critics think it could be the world’s worst.

I want to meet her. Anyone who can create this much controversy within a week, I want to meet. I love people like that.

Ark Music Factory produced the song and video, using US$2,000 (£1,223, C$1,964, €1,412) from Black’s mother. Friday’s video was shot at Black’s father’s house, with her family and friends as extras. The song beat an alternative track when choosing what to record.

The single is climbing up the iTunes singles chart in the United Kingdom and the United States, gaining a higher position in the US than Canadian singer Justin Bieber.

Despite the song’s popularity, it has received a largely negative reception. According to Newsbeat, critics have cited Friday as being “the worst song of all time.” On YouTube, the video attracted approximately thirty-six thousand ‘likes’ versus over 314,000 ‘dislikes’. The song itself has been ridiculed for its lyrics and criticised for its use of Auto-Tune.

Feeling “like [she was] being cyber-bullied,” Rebecca Black said “[w]hen I first saw all these nasty comments I thought this is all my fault, … this was all because of me.” Black says of “[t]hose hurtful comments”, the worst was “I hope you cut yourself and I hope you get an eating disorder so you look pretty. I hope you cut and die.” Clarence Jey, of Ark Music Factory, offered to take the video off YouTube, but Black declined.

In contrast, British music executive Simon Cowell has expressed a positive interest in Rebecca Black. “I love her and the fact she’s gotten so much publicity,” Cowell commented. “People are so upset about the song, but I think it’s hysterical. I want to meet her. Anyone who can create this much controversy within a week, I want to meet. I love people like that.”

Rebecca Black herself wants to record a duet with Justin Bieber. “I have Bieber fever — I am in love with Justin Bieber,” Black commented. The teenager said it “would be unbelievable and make my life”.

By Adriana N.

Drinking and driving is not only illegal, but it is dangerous and can result in the loss of lives, even your own. Because of their public visibility, there have been a number of celebrities who have been in the news for being arrested for a DUI. (Driving Under the Influence) Below is a list of celebrities who have been arrested for DUI:

Richie Sambora: Bon Jovi guitarist, Richie Sambora, was arrested for drunk driving in Laguna Beach, California on March 25 2008. His BAC was reportedly .13%. His daughter and another child were in the car at the time of the arrest. Sambora and Prosecutors made a deal that called for Sambora to plead no contest to driving with blood alcohol content above the legal limit. In exchange the district attorney dropped the more serious charge of California DUI. Sambora also was ordered to complete a three month alcohol awareness class and pay court fees.

Stephanie Pratt: One of the star’s of the MTV reality show, ‘The Hills,’ Stephanie Pratt was arrested for driving under the influence in Los Angeles on October 18, 2009. She was pulled over in Hollywood about 3:45 am and booked for suspicion of California DUI. She posted $5000 bond and was released on Sunday.

Charles Barkley: Former NBA player Charles Barkley was arrested for DUI in Gilbert Arizona on December 31, 2008. Barkley was stopped by police for running a red light in Old Town Scottsdale. His blood alcohol content was reportedly .149%. Barkley pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 10 days in jail; however, five of those days will be suspended if Barkley completes an alcohol treatment program. He was also fined more than $2,000. Barkley was a member of the Phoenix Suns in the NBA and is at present, a sports analyst for TNT.

Chad Kroeger: Nickelback band lead singer Chad Kroeger was arrested in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in June 2006 for DUI. Kroeger was stopped for speeding in his Lamborghini. The officers detected alcohol and administered a breathalyzer test. Kroger’s blood alcohol level registered .14% and he was charged with drunk driving. He lost his driver’s license for one year and was fined $590.

Mel Gibson: On July 28, 2006, actor and film producer Mel Gibson was arrested in Malibu California for driving under the influence. Gibson entered a no contest plea to the CA DUI charges. He was sentenced to three years probation and fined $1,300. He also had his license suspended for 90 days and was ordered to enroll in an alcohol abuse program and attend Alcoholic Anonymous meetings.

Khloe Kardashian: Reality television show star Khloe Kardashian, star of ‘Keeping up with the Kardashians,’ was arrested in 2007 for driving under the influence in California. Kardashian was sentenced to 36 months of probation and was required to complete community service and attend alcohol education classes. Because she failed to do both, Kardashian was sentenced to 30 days in jail, but only spent five hours incarcerated due to overcrowding in the jail. Khloe Kardashian was also on the television show, ‘The Celebrity Apprentice.’

It is important not to follow the example of celebrities who drink and drive. You could receive a big fine, lose, your license, and possibly go to jail. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Traffic Safety Data, “In 2008, an estimated 11,773 people died in drunken driving related crashes.”

Dead body left in UK hospital alongside living patients for seven hours

Thursday, August 14, 2008

A dead body was left in a ward in Stobhill Hospital, Glasgow, Scotland for seven hours before it was removed.

Christine Martin, who saw the body, said that although there were curtains around the body, they “were open sufficiently for me to see this man, whom we had got to know over a period of 10 days, lying dead, face uncovered.”

Officials from the hospital have apologized for having allowed the incident to occur. The son of the dead man said that the hospital acted with “utter compassion” when permitting his request to see his father’s dead body in the ward.

National Health Service Greater Glasgow and Clyde said in a statement that, “we have acknowledged to the Martins that, beyond this, there was some delay in the transfer of the patient to the mortuary and steps have already been taken to ensure that this does not happen again.”

The Royal College of Nursing also released a statement on this incident. “The normal practice if someone has died in a four-bedded ward is to access a single room where the deceased could be viewed by the family and the family can have some time with the relative, and for that to be done in as dignified manner as possible,” said Lynn McDowall, a professional officer for the organization. “This case highlights the campaign we’re running and highlights the kind of problems nurses come across, because no nurse would want a deceased patient lying on a ward for seven hours.”

Kim Yo Jong criticizes US-South Korean military drills

Thursday, March 18, 2021

On Monday, Kim Yo Jong, vice department director of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea and sister of the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, warned the United States and South Korea as a reaction to the joint military drills conducted by the US and South Korea.

In a statement released by the Rodong Sinmun, Kim Yo Jong said: “The peaceful spring days of three years ago are unlikely to return”. Arirang News asserted the “peaceful spring” refers to the inter-Korean meetings held in April 2018.

In her statement, Kim described ‘the south Korean authorities’ as “all born with stupidity” and “become the dumb and deaf bereft of judgment”. In response to the drills — which the North Korean government reportedly perceived as a threat — Kim expressed the possibility of closing various inter-Korean organizations like the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Country and the Kumgangsan International Tourism Bureau. “We also examine the issue of dissolving the Kumgangsan International Tourism Bureau and other organizations concerned as any cooperation and exchange with the south Korean authorities antagonizing us are no longer necessary”, Kim said.

Towards the end of the statement, Kim said, “If it [the United States] wants to sleep in peace for coming four years, it had better refrain from causing a stink at its first step.”

Speaking to Arirang News, Yang Moo-Jin, the vice president for public affairs at the University of North Korean Studies, said the message indicates “the regime is willing to talk […] as long as the South [Korean authorities] show some sincerity by not raising tensions through the joint drills”. Lim Eul-chul, a professor of North Korean studies at the Kyungnam University, said the North “is reaffirming its long-held stance that there will be no talks unless sanctions against the regime are lifted”. In an interview with Arirang News, Andrei Lankov, the director of the Korea Risk Group, said the message is nothing out of the ordinary, and similar messages have been coming each spring and the contents of this message are not to be overestimated. He qualified the statement as being “business as usual” and “by the North Korean standards it’s pretty tame”.

Diebold “whistleblower” faces criminal charges in California

Saturday, March 4, 2006

Los Angeles County prosecutors have brought three felony charges against Stephen Heller for stealing documents from his employer, the law firm Jones Day.

The legal documents discussed the legal ramifications of activist allegations that Diebold Election Systems had used uncertified voting systems in Alameda County elections beginning in 2002. Jones Day represented the controversial electronic voting machine manufacturer at the time. The firm’s lawyers concluded that if such uncertified systems were used, then Diebold could be sued by Alameda County for millions of dollars. The memos also discussed whether the California’s secretary of state had the authority to investigate Diebold.

Mr. Heller has been charged with felony access to computer data, commercial burglary and receiving stolen property. He has pled not guilty.

Blair Berk, Heller’s attorney said, “It’s a devastating allegation for a whistle-blower. Certainly, someone who saw those documents could have reasonably believed that thousands of voters were going to be potentially disenfranchised in upcoming elections.”

No surprises for sport in 2012/2013 Australian federal budget

Thursday, May 10, 2012

On Monday in Canberra, the Australian government released its annual budget, one that promises a A$1.5 billion surplus for the year, but little was said of the potential impact of the budget on Australian sport in an Olympic year when Australia is looking to earn the fewest medals since the 1996 Games in Atlanta. There were no apparent surprises for the sports sector in Australia in this budget. The budget, available online, claims A$380 million has been spent preparing for the 2012 Olympic Games.

According to Keith Lyons, the University of Canberra Director of the National Institute of Sport Studies, sport is an important part of Australian culture and the development of sport enjoys bipartisan support. The sport “budget supports infrastructure developments and reflects a renewal of Australian sport venues post Sydney [Olympics] 2000. The Active After School investment reflects a commitment to support participation and engagement in physical activity and sport.”

When Tony Naar of the Australian Paralympic Committee was asked about the impact of the budget on his organisation’s efforts, he said there was little to report as there were “very few previously unannounced initiatives… the overall level of program funding was in line with the final year of the current funding cycle”.

The budget promises to support cricket, specifically the 2015 Cricket World Cup, and soccer (football) with the 2015 Asian Cup by allocating funding for facility improvement. A$50 million will be spent on redeveloping the Sydney Cricket Ground, A$30 million on redeveloping the Adelaide Oval, and A$15 million on redeveloping the Bellerive Oval in Hobart. A partnership between the government, New South Wales Government and the Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust will cover additional costs associated with the Sydney Cricket Ground with work completed by 2014. Local sporting infrastructure will be supported in the budget with A$30 million earmarked for this, A$10 million specifically to improve Melbourne’s Olympic Park Precinct, A$5 million to support football in western Sydney, and A$3 million for Football New South Wales to build a new headquarters.

The budget promises assistance to parents to defray the cost of their children’s extracurricular activities including sport as part of the SchoolKid Bonus, which will replace the Education Tax Refund. Support for school based youth sport with A$39.2 million allocated to Active After-School Communities, a program that reaches 190,000 children, which encourages them to participate in school sports. In an attempt to curb drowning deaths of young children, an initiative has been launched to improve water safety that will be run through early childhood centres. A$19.2 million was extended to the Australian Sport Commission to run its Active After-School Communities program in 2012/2013 with similar funding for 2013/2014. 2,000 schools and 1,300 after/out of school programs will benefit from the funding.

Community Street Soccer was allocated A$1.0 million for 2012/2013 and A$1.6 million for 2013/2014. Aimed at bringing the homeless and unemployed into the community through participation in soccer, Reclink Australia will be given the funding to implement the program.

A$4.8 million was allocated to the Clontarf Foundation in New South Wales to support local sport and utilised elsewhere encourage Indigenous girls to participate in sport in Western Australia, Northern Territory, Victoria and Queensland through the Sporting Chance Program.

Canberra’s Centenary celebrations are addressed in the Federal budget, with A$2.6 million allocated for 2011/2012, A$2.0 million allocated for 2012/2013 and A$1.0 million allocated for 2013/2014. Some money will go towards sport as a part of these celebrations.

The Federal government is investing in Glenorchy, Tasmania, budgeting A$8.7 million in the redevelopment of the King George V sports and community precinct, with the money given to the local government. Not all of the money is earmarked for sport, with some money paying for a dedicated office for the Migrant Resource Centre.

A$1,870,000 less was budgeted for the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority from what was actually spent in 2011/2012’s budget. The government expects A$5.8 million in savings in the next four years because of changes in athlete doping testing.

In the 2011/2012 budget year, A$2,729,510 was spent on Regional Australia, Local Government, Arts and Sport in special appropriations. The 2012/2013 budget earmarks A$1,117,783 for this category. All money in the category is allocated in line with the Local Government (Financial Assistance) Act 1995. In the Sport and Recreation Special Account out of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet appropriation budget, the cash flow and balance opened the budget year with A$920,000 and receipts totaled A$317,000.

In the Department of Regional Australia, Local Government, Arts and Sport appropriation budget, the Sport and Recreation Special Account had has an opening balance of A$949,000. Estimates for receipts for 2012/2013 are A$537,000, up from A$220,000 in actual receipts in 2011/2012’s budget. The Australian Sports Commission spent A$214,534,000 in 2011/2012 in their first budget category, and have a smaller budget of A$101,942,000 for 2012/2013 in the same category. In their budget second category, they spent A$54,159,000 in 2011/2012, with the 2012/2013 budget increasing the budget to A$166,201,000. For total appropriations, the first area decreased by a total of A$117,170,000 and the second area saw an increase in of A$114,353,000.

Police raid filesharing resources

Tuesday, December 21, 2004

Europe — In recent weeks several large European BitTorrent and ed2k link sites have either been closed by the police or have gone offline voluntarily. Sites in France, Netherlands, Finland and Slovenia have been affected.

On December 14, FIOD-ECD, the Dutch economic crimes police, raided the premises of the hosting provider Mindlab. Servers hosting sites Releases4u.com and Shareconnector.com were seized by the police. The reported number of systems seized differs, from 4 (tweakers.net) to 11 (the register). The raids were initiated by BREIN, a Dutch non-government “copyright oversight organization”.

BitTorrent link sites distribute torrents, which are computer files with information about a larger, shared file co-ordinated by small servers known as trackers. Unlike predecessors of P2P applications like Napster, this sharing is not centralised on the servers of link site operators, and no illegal files exist on the servers of link site operators. Although such a system has been previously thought to be a legal loophole for file sharers, the recent spate of raids by copyright enforcement authorities apparently proves otherwise.

Prior to raids Mindlab clients Releases4u and ShareConnector were the largest link sites for the ed2k network in the Netherlands. Mindlab had previously refused to remove the servers for Releases4u and ShareConnector, arguing that such link sites were legal in the Netherlands.

The servers were taken down after a discussion that went nowhere according to Tim Kuik, head of BREIN. “We simply ran of patience,” he says.

At the same time, FinReactor, one of the largest link sites in Finland was raided by the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (Keskusrikospoliisi, KRP) at the request of Finnish copyright organisations.

On December 19 two large BitTorrent sites, SuprNova.org and TorrentBits.org closed without providing an explanation, although these have apparently been voluntary decisions by the operators of the sites.

Prior to its closure SuprNova.org, based in Slovenia, was generally considered to be the largest BitTorrent link site on the Internet that hosted links to both authorised (e.g. Linux software) and unauthorised files (e.g. Hollywood films). This closure is surprising as it has been generally thought that its location in Slovenia would make it invulnerable to the actions of American-based copyright enforcement groups.

According to a statement made later on the site by its site’s 18 year-old owner, who goes by the nickname Sloncek, and an interview for Slyck, he decided to voluntarily close the links section of the site after the news about arrests of admins of several prominent P2P sites and after receiving legal warnings.

Although the forums and the IRC network will remain online, SuprNova.org claims that it will no longer hold links to BitTorrent files again.

At the end of 2004, eXeem, a project to decentralize the BitTorrent link network developed by SuprNova.org, reached a beta stage.

In a bid to avoid the pitfall of Napster, most other major filesharing networks are decentralized, including Gnutella, Gnutella 2, KaZaA and eDonkey2000.

The goal of Exceem was to eliminate the need for torrent link sites and trackers by allowing every user to easily publish new files on the network without having to post a torrent file on a centralized server and distribute them without dedicated trackers. The closed beta testing with more than 5,000 users was underway by December. The status of eXeem after the closure of SuprNova.org remains unclear.

TorrentBits.org, another link site was closed at about the same time, the reason of which is still unknown at this time. The site’s founder and owner, known by the nickname “Redbeard”, remains unavailable for comment.

Other torrent sites that have reportedly closed are Delirium Vault, Youceff Torrents (closed by French police), Phoenix Torrents (closed voluntarily).

Activities of P2P link sites have not been proved to be illegal and so far no link site was successfully sued by copyright owners. However, police in many countries are often willing to close the sites when they are accused of copyright violations. Confiscating the servers is usually enough to destroy the site, as most of the sites are run by volunteers on a non-profit basis, who are unable and unwilling to fight a prolonged legal battle.

The first large link site to be closed, ShareReactor, was taken down by Swiss police on March 10th, 2004.

Raids have apparently followed a trend of a higher probability of raids when site owners have received donations from file sharers; some believe that this allows authorities to charge operators of such link sites for copyright crime instead of copyright infringement. ShareReactor and ShareConnector were both closed soon after purchasing new server equipment using money donated by their users.

Many people have suspected that the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), a trade association representing the interests of major movie studios based in the United States, are linked to police actions, although the extent of their involvement is unknown at this stage. The MPAA has taken credit for the closure of FinReactor, although the KRP has officially denied that MPAA had any contacts with Finnish authorities [1].

BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer (P2P) file distribution tool written by programmer Bram Cohen which was debuted at CodeCon 2002. BitTorrent allows many people to download one file at fast speeds. It does this by having downloaders swap portions of a file with one another, instead of downloading from a single centralised server or individual. It is particularly suited to quickly distributing new files to a large number of users.

eDonkey2000 is a peer-to-peer file sharing application developed by MetaMachine, using the Multisource File Transfer Protocol. eDonkey network encourages permanent sharing of files, ensuring good long-term availability, but is not as effective as BitTorrent in quickly spreading new releases.

The Art Of Manufacturing And Supplying Medical Equipment: A Guide For Every Hospital

Finding the right kind of medical equipment manufacturer is not only desirable but also necessary in today’s fast-paced world where the number of problems is far greater than the number of cures. Every problem that brings a patient to the doors of a hospital requires proper care and attention. And for specialized care and attention for each problem, every hospital needs to be very well equipped with equipment that is necessary for finding an appropriate solution to each problem.

All hospitals need a hospital equipment manufacturer to sustain in business

And for that, every hospital needs to be backed by a very efficient hospital equipment manufacturer that not only helps with the intricacies of the problem at hand but also withstands the test of time so that adequate return on investment can be recovered from the equipment supplies.

What is a medical supply company?

All types of medical professionals, from veterinarians to midwives and eye doctors, need specific supplies to perform their jobs perfectly. Therefore, a medical supplies company is required to help the doctors perform their job in the best possible way. Most hospitals and private clinics buy medical supplies from niche companies that specialize in a certain type of equipment. While various large medical supply companies rule the market, it is quite possible for a small independent medical supply business to sustain in the industry.

A medical supply company is usually set up in a house or office space where it is easier to show the products and their functionality to their prospective buyers. Such companies basically decide the size of their facility depending upon their budget and the needs of their prospective buyers. However, special care needs to be taken when handling medical supplies. The medical supply company must be clean and dust-free in order to prevent the supplies from becoming contaminated. Moreover, a medical supply company also needs to have an appropriate temperature that must be friendly with the supplies that will be stored in the facility. However, it is also important to understand that the Medical Supply Industry is Vast and Diverse and that there is a constant expansion happening in the quantity and variety of medical supplies every day – be it a new invention in times of need or any kind of up-gradation that happens in an existing product by the manufacturer himself.

Industry has now moved to more than just general medical devices

The medical supply industry is no more limited togeneral medical devices in today’s world. There have been bifurcations and most devices have now evolved from manual to electronic. Besides that, the devices have now been segregated into different categories to tackle different types of problems. Different types of medical devices now include – self-care, diagnostics, long-term care, surgical, durable medical equipment, acute care equipment, emergency and trauma equipment and storage and transports medical devices – which, in the future, expected to be game-changers and support life in its best state by tackling problems in routine lives and making the world a better place to live in.
