Jetstar to offer iPads as an in-flight entertainment option

Wednesday, June 2, 2010File:IPad-02.jpg

Jetstar Airways, a Qantas owned Australian low-cost airline, has announced plans to trial Apple iPads as an in-flight entertainment option. This trial would make Jetstar one of the first airlines in the world to offer the iPad.

Starting later this month, Jetstar plans to begin a two-week trial, during which passengers will have the option to rent iPads for AU$10 on domestic flights longer than an hour. Thirty iPads would be available on each test plane. These devices would be preloaded with games, e-books, music and video content. Internet access however will be disabled as per Jetstar’s policy on internet connected devices, said spokeswoman Andrea Wait.

The iPads offered by Jetstar, will be specially customized by Bluebox Avionics. Bluebox Avionics, at present, is the only company to offer iPads as part of an in-flight entertainment system. Jetstar will be the first to offer the Bluebox Avionics iPad based systems, though, Bluebox Avionics has said the system will be available to other airlines soon.

Shortly following the initial release of the iPad, Jetstar chief information officer Stephen Tame speculated that the iPad “may lead in the future the end of airline in-flight entertainment systems”. Depending on the results of the trial, iPads may replace existing Jetstar in-flight entertainment systems.

Jetstar chief executive Bruce Buchanan said he expected the iPads to be very popular during the trial. If the trial is successful, the airline would “be looking to roll out the devices across our entire domestic and international network later in the year”, said Buchanan.

Open source game developer Perttu Ahola talks about Minetest with Wikinews

Tuesday, June 30, 2020

Recently, Finnish open-source video game developer Perttu Ahola discussed Minetest, his “longest ever project”, with Wikinews.

Started in October 2010, Minetest was an attempt by Ahola to create a sandbox game similar to Minecraft. Minecraft is a multi-platform commercial game, which was in alpha version when Ahola challenged himself to create something similar to it from scratch, he told Wikinews.

Minetest is an open-source game, which is free for anyone to download and play. It is written in the C++ programming language, and the source code is available on code-hosting site GitHub. According to Ahola, Minetest attempts to run on older hardware, with limited graphics, but to be accessible to more people: those who have outdated technology, and making it available for no cost. Minecraft, on the other hand, is a paid game, currently costing USD 26.95 for its computer version. Minecraft is currently owned by Microsoft, and performs poorly on older hardware.

A correspondent from French Wikinews contacted Perttu Ahola via Internet Relay Chat a few weeks ago, discussing Minecraft. This interview is built on top of the previous interview, as we take a deeper dive into knowing more about this free game which is about to turn ten years old in a few months.

How To Choose Your Enterprise Mobility Partner

Submitted by: Jennifer Lewis

Unless you are an organization with internal capabilities to service your enterprise mobility projects, you would probably need to partner with someone who does. In your enterprise mobility journey, the choice of the right partner is paramount. You need an organization that will understand and appreciate your needs, and turn your mobilization dream into reality. If you make a wrong choice, you would end up sinking a lot of money and effort without any results, much less an ROI.

Forrester research has categorized the enterprise mobility services providers into 4 buckets.

1. UI focused, design oriented companies these are the organizations you choose if you are looking for low complexity, customer facing applications. The strength of these organizations is creating beautiful UIs, which are engaging as they are good looking. Their USP is creative design, and you can see it in their products.

2. Technology centric, flexible boutiques These are smaller establishments with great developer teams. They are willing to bend over backwards to accommodate your needs. The customers like them because they pay them attention, and make them feel special.

3. Large, global organizations, with a big portfolio These organizations are large, with ample funding, and can handle complex, long term projects. They have resources for multiple technology types, and can bring significant technology expertise to bear when required.

4. Telecom providers offering managed services historically used to providing and managing networks, the telcos have diversified into providing end-to-end network services. They have something that any other category of providers does not the control over the transport layer.

Now how do you pick the right vendor for your requirements? There are some key factors that need to be considered when making the choice. These can be classified into 3 broad buckets

1. Relevance – you need to understand the partner s existing offerings, and how do they map to your requirements. You need to look at any existing products, and see how mature they are. Look at UI design, functional specs, and performance. The vendor s service portfolio along with the consulting capabilities also needs to be taken into consideration. See what consulting services they provide for end-to-end mobility solutions. Their service levels should match up to your business commitment, and user requirements. Another factor to consider is the partner s capabilities and past experiences in creating, deploying and managing the scope the size of yours, preferably in the same vertical.

2. Vision and future roadmap mobility is a strategic direction, and is going to be in your environment for a long time. Therefore, it is important that you choose a partner that is not only relevant to your environment today, but also has the right direction for the future. See where they are spending their research and development dollars, and what platforms they are investing in. Understand how their story and offerings are different from the competition. You want to find services oriented partner, and not a product company that provides services on the side. Other factors to consider would be their business model sustainability in the long run, their partnerships, and market positioning.

3. Reputation and image Budgets are too tight to make all the mistakes on your own. You need to understand how the market perceives the organization, along with their existing customers. See their growth numbers employee strength. Check if they are having higher than normal attrition, and how cash rich the company is.

These parameters will help you find the right partner after proper evaluation.

Water main bursts in White Plains, New York, US

Thursday, August 13, 2020

On Monday, a water main broke in the US city of White Plains, New York, cutting off the water supply to most of the city. The burst pipe caused a huge crater to form in a major intersection in the heart of the city, flooding the streets. Emergency crews were on the scene to repair the pipes in order to restore water service. Almost all customers had water restored by the evening.

The water pipe burst under the road surface at the intersection of Martine Avenue and S. Lexington Avenue in the afternoon. By 5:00 pm EDT (2100 UTC) the city issued an advisory of water outages and stated the Department of Public Works (DPW) had located the problem. Wikinews was on the scene around 6:20 pm and could observe a large crater in the street caused by the amount of water from the burst pipe. Crews from DPW as well as some the fire department were there. Water was no longer rushing uncontrolled into the street.

Shortly thereafter, at 6:30 pm, the city issued a follow-up statement announcing the break had been contained by DPW. Residents were advised to expect the water to perhaps be “discolored” when it initially returned. The city estimated by 9 pm, there would be enough pressure returned to the water system for all to have water. Indeed, News 12 reported, only buildings adjacent to the break were without water service.

White Plains is the county seat for Westchester County, New York, which is also home to the cities New Rochelle and Yonkers which formed the epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak in New York. Westchester lies directly to the north of New York City.

The Importance Of Good Network Design

By Derek Rogers

One of the main reasons behind why good network designs are necessary for people who are interested in making a success of their Internet business is because a good network design company specifies, supplies, as well as installs the right network equipment. Any network developed in this way will be based upon the requirements as well as the specifications of that particular customer. An alternative use of a good network design is to make sure that a proper and workable network infrastructure can be made which is going to be high performance and extremely secure.

Many companies get together with the client, so that they can find out what is necessary and then look at the best equipment that is tailor-made to suit the requirements of the company. You might be looking for a straightforward upgrade of an existing network or complete overhaul with a brand new network. The main criteria is that for every single piece of brand new design or even just network upgards, one needs to have a professional to look at the network structure that is present at the prior to starting any work before making any suggestions about the necessary changes. After that, they’ll be provided with a quotation about the necessary bracing as well as the deliverables, which are ultimately going to make up the final product.

A good network design is going to have services integrated within it as well as a complete identification is made of the design as well as the existing infrastructure. The network design company should inform the client all about an efficient and cost-effective way in which they can get the network design made to suit the requirements of his business.

These design solutions should be quantifiable as well as rubberstamped, so that the implementation as well as the network upgrade can be made to measure.

Reference documents should always be at hand while the network planning is done so that testing can be done easily throughout. Technical quotations in a detailed format are also useful in making sure that the client gets exactly what has been discussed and what they have paid for.

In fact, the client should be provided with the most detailed information regarding the entire process starting from application profiling, to pricing and documentation. If you happen to be just starting out in your new Internet business and are looking for a company that can give you a good network design, do remember to ask if the company can supply you with these important services as well as any other requirements that you may have.

After the initial talks have been done with the customer service as well as the technical department, a professional consultant needs to be sent down by the company so that the client knows everything about the project cost, resource requirements, as well as the timescale in which the project can be completely efficiently and effectively. After the project is planned in proper and methodical detail, only then can the implementation work begin. Ideally of course you should be looking for a network design company that is ultimately going to give you competitive pricing, as well as really quick results.
