UK Parliament begins debate on Brexit deal

Thursday, December 6, 2018

On Tuesday, the United Kingdom Parliament started five days of debates ahead of a vote over Prime Minister Theresa May’s deal to leave the European Union.

The deal being debated is a withdrawal agreement for the United Kingdom (UK)’s exit from the European Union (EU), and a political framework defining ambitions for the future of the UK–EU relationship.

I have spent nearly two years negotiating this deal

In a statement to the House of Commons shortly before debates began, Theresa May said “I have spent nearly two years negotiating this deal […] I have lost valued colleagues along the way, I have faced fierce criticism from all sides. If I had banged the table, walked out of the room, and at the end of the process delivered the very same deal that is before us today, some might say that I’d done a better job.”

Following the debates, a vote in the House of Commons is to determine if the deal will be implemented. The vote is scheduled for next Tuesday, December 11.

Jackfruit Tacos: The Perfect Solution For Vegan Taco Eaters?}

Jackfruit Tacos: The Perfect Solution for Vegan Taco Eaters?

by

Justin Prietto

The huge, rough-skin fruit can grow as big as watermelons. In an un-ripened form the fruit itself has a meat-like texture that goes well in tacos.

One of the more interesting fruits to come out of the jungles of far off lands lately is the jackfruit. A dietary staple for centuries in southeast and south Asia, this ungainly, huge piece of produce is turning up in hip Western restaurants. Here in the U.S., jackfruit is a surprisingly good substitute for meat in vegan recipes including in tacos.

That substitution is possible because the non-ripened form of the jackfruit resembles meat in texture (once it ripens it has a sugar content that puts it more in the category of mangoes and bananas). With proper seasoning, it can also have a convincingly meat-like taste. So particularly for vegetarians and vegans, the jackfruit is being tried in all kinds of recipes as a substitute for animal meats.

Specialty taco caterers are beginning to provide vegan taco catering upon request. And they arent alone: an Internet search for jackfruit tacos turns up all kinds of combinations: as a substitute for pulled pork, one taco recipe might include garlicky chipotle sauce, paprika, tamari, maple syrup, a squeeze of lime and chopped cilantro.

In fact, cooks who are experienced with jackfruit find the ingredient to be broadly versatile. This includes those who provide generalized mobile taco catering, not just vegetarian taco caterers.

What might disappoint anyone using jackfruit as a meat substitute is its low protein content. In a 100 gram (3.5 ounce) serving it will have about 1.72 grams of protein; a chicken taco will be closer to 13 grams. But it is high in dietary fiber, vitamin B6, vitamin C, potassium and magnesium. Before cooking, jackfruit also is constituted of 73.5% water, a fact welcomed by those who want to avoid calorie dense foods.

The low protein content can be compensated for with other ingredients. For example, taco catering firms can and also do supplement the protein content with beans, avocadoes and cheese. The tortilla shells have protein as well: 1 gram in corn, 3 grams in flour.

And for diners concerned about sustainability, all produce including the jackfruit will be naturally advantaged over animal protein sources. Beef, pork, goat and chicken require far more resource inputs such as water and feed (sourced from agriculture, which requires significant amounts of water, fertilizer, pesticides and herbicide use), in addition to antibiotic use in most industrialized animal feedlots. Jackfruit trees grow naturally in the hot, humid climates of south India, and similar climates in Asia, Africa, Hawaii, Brazil and the East Indies. While requiring irrigation only in drought conditions, the biggest environmental impact is they need to be shipped to all other regions.

Taco purveyors are among the first to introduce jackfruit to American diners. Expect to see them more frequently in years to come as chefs experiment further with recipes.

Sweden’s Crown Princess marries long-time boyfriend

Monday, June 21, 2010

Sweden’s first royal wedding since 1976 took place Saturday when Crown Princess Victoria, 32, married her long-time boyfriend and former personal trainer, Daniel Westling, 36. The ceremony took place at Stockholm Cathedral.

Over 1,200 guests, including many rulers, politicians, royals and other dignitaries from across the world, attended the wedding, which cost an estimated 20 million Swedish kronor. Victoria wore a wedding dress with five-metre long train designed by Pär Engsheden. She wore the same crown that her mother, Queen Silvia, wore on her wedding day 34 years previously, also on June 19. Victoria’s father, King Carl XVI Gustaf, walked Victoria down the aisle, which was deemed untraditional by many. In Sweden, the bride and groom usually walk down the aisle together, emphasising the country’s views on equality. Victoria met with Daniel half-way to the altar, where they exchanged brief kisses, and, to the sounds of the wedding march, made their way to the the silver altar. She was followed by ten bridesmaids. The couple both had tears in their eyes as they said their vows, and apart from fumbling when they exchanged rings, the ceremony went smoothly.

Following the ceremony, the couple headed a fast-paced procession through central Stockholm on a horse-drawn carriage, flanked by police and security. Up to 500,000 people are thought to have lined the streets. They then boarded the Vasaorden, the same royal barge Victoria’s parents used in their wedding, and traveled through Stockholm’s waters, accompanied by flyover of 18 fighter jets near the end of the procession. A wedding banquet followed in the in the Hall of State of the Royal Palace.

Controversy has surrounded the engagement and wedding between the Crown Princess and Westling, a “commoner”. Victoria met Westling as she was recovering from bulemia in 2002. He owned a chain of gymnasiums and was brought in to help bring Victoria back to full health. Westling was raised in a middle-class family in Ockelbo, in central Sweden. His father managed a social services centre, and his mother worked in a post office. When the relationship was made public, Westling was mocked as an outsider and the king was reportedly horrified at the thought of his daughter marrying a “commoner”, even though he did so when he married Silvia. Last year, Westling underwent transplant surgery for a congenital kidney disorder. The Swedish public have been assured that he will be able to have children and that his illness will not be passed on to his offspring.

Westling underwent years of training to prepare for his new role in the royal family, including lessons in etiquette, elocution, and multi-lingual small talk; and a makeover that saw his hair being cropped short, and his plain-looking glasses and clothes being replaced by designer-wear.

Upon marrying the Crown Princess, Westling took his wife’s ducal title and is granted the style “His Royal Highness”. He is now known as HRH Prince Daniel, Duke of Västergötland. He also has his own coat-of-arms and monogram. When Victoria assumes the throne and becomes Queen, Daniel will not become King, but assume a supportive role, similar to that of Prince Phillip, the husband of the United Kingdom’s Queen Elizabeth II.

International participants showcase different industry cultures at 2008 Taipei Game Show

Friday, January 25, 2008

B2B Trade Area of Taipei Game Show, criticized by trade buyers last year, but accompanied with 2008 Taiwan Digital Content Forum, moved to the second floor at Taipei World Trade Center for world-wide participants with a better exchange atmosphere this year.

Not only local OBMs (Softstar Entertainment, Soft-World International Corp., International Games System Corp., …, etc.) but also companies from New Zealand, Canada, Japan, Hong Kong, and South Korea showcased different specialists with multiple styles. Especially on South Korea, participated members from G? Trade Show (Game Show & Trade, All-Round, aka Gstar) showcased gaming industry of South Korea and the G? upcoming at this November with brochures.

In the 2-days Digital Content Forum, world-class experts not only shared industry experiences, members from Taiwan Gaming Industry Association also discussed and forecasted marketing models for gaming industry. With participations from governmental, industrial, and academical executives world-wide, this forum helps them gained precious experiences of digital content industry from several countries.

According to the Taipei Computer Association, the show and forum organizer, the digital content industry in Taiwan was apparently grown up recent years as Minister of Economic Affairs of the Republic of China Steve Ruey-long Chen said at Opening Ceremony yesterday. Without R&Ds from cyber-gaming, and basic conceptions from policies and copyright issues, this (digital content) industry will be fallen down in Taiwan. If this industry wanted to be grown up in sustainability, gaming OBMs in Taiwan should independently produce different and unique games and change market style to market brands and games to the world.

What would you tell your grandchildren about 2007 if they asked you about it in, let’s say, 20 year’s time? If the answer to a quiz question was 2007, what would the question be? The year that you first signed on to Facebook? The year Britney Spears and Amy Winehouse fell apart? The year author Kurt Vonnegut or mime Marcel Marceau died, both at 84?

Let’s take a look at some of the international stories of 2007. Links to the original Wikinews articles are in bold.

Lucidity, Secret Doorway In The Night}

Lucidity, Secret Doorway in the Night

by

Jonathon Byron

I often find myself thinking, traveling back to a simpler place in time watching old memories unfold in front of my mind’s eye as a young child somewhere around the age of four. Back then no fences or boundaries had been placed on what I thought was possible in my mind. None of my ambitions or passions were limited by the reality that had been imposed on the adults around me. My parents were all grown up, I couldn’t comprehend the thought that they too had once been young in their past just like I was. My dad was my hero, right up there with the likes of Super Man. My mother was, in my eyes, the best mom in the world and the love that I shared with the two of them along with my big sister was unlike what any other little boy ever had. What I had was special, it was my own unique wonderful world that belonged only to me. The restrains of life through use of simple mathematics, logic, reasoning and reality were among the many things that had not been imposed on my innocence.

Even after all this time, I can still remember the smell of the dirt and the taste of my own tears. I can vividly hear the sound of my moms voice as she yelled out from the front porch to me that it was time to come in for dinner. I’ve packed on thirty plus years and a few wrinkles since I was that little boy playing in the back yard throwing that ball around. I’ve also had countless friends and family members that have passed on throughout the years. I’ve since learned to function successfully, at least by my standards, with all the restrictions that reality has placed on my adult life. I now have a family of my own and both of my children are much older than that little boy in the back yard that I remember so fondly.

We’ve all have heard the saying that you never know what you’ve got till it’s gone. With little effort, we can all can tie those nine words back to a vivid memory, strong emotion or even a loved one from our past and would all fully agree that it’s an absolute understatement. The closer we become to someone has a direct impact on the risk we’re willing to take in our interactions with them knowing full well that chances of forgiveness for our actions will be almost endless. The reality of life is that all second chances come to an end sooner or later and are replaced with the truths of how things were last left. With even the slightest passage of time as we begin to age, we often begin to see and recognize the patterns of life as they come full circle around us. My thoughts on life and the importance of those who I love has evolved much over the last ten years, just as it had changed in the ten years prior.

Although I’ll never be able to go back and enjoy my simple years as an adolescence, I have found a doorway in the night that has opened up further and further for me in the last several years. On the other side of this door is a whole other world that waits for me, a secret world of lucidity, where I step into my dreams at night and take charge. This is a place where I can go back in time and throw that ball around in my back yard again. I can take back those truths that were last left and have a second chance to right my wrongs and the opportunity to leave someone better than when I found them. Welcome to the world of lucid dreaming.

Although dreams can seem real, they normally lack any level of self consciousness that would normally tie us down to reality like that of when we are awake. With lucid dreaming however, there exists a level of consciousness that allows us to realize with absolute clarity that we’re dreaming. Once you’ve experienced a dream where you are fully aware you are doing so, you’ve started down a path that some people will never get to experience in an entire lifetime, pure dream control. This path, if you choose to follow and develop it, can be just as rewarding if not more so than anything you can achieve during your waking hours.

You can do or see anything that you wish, you’re not even limited by your own personal experiences or memories. If you want to fly over a city that you’ve never visited before you can do so with such detail and clarity that you will be utterly amazed. You can admire with detailed precision every building’s unique architecture and count the number of bricks on any wall. You can see and follow the cracks in the sidewalk and can fly down low and look into a window. You can walk into any home and navigate effortlessly throughout while recognizing the familiar smells of breakfast being cooked in the kitchen. You can read the writing on the shirt of a person relaxing in the park or read a page out of the book that the person is holding in their hands. The detail is amazing and as you’re aware that you’re in a dream you will be able to think and reflect on how vivid and detailed everything is at the moment. It’s not the same as watching a movie and following the focal point of the camera, you are the one in control of which direction the camera is pointing and the speed of which it moves.

You can spend time with or have a conversation with anyone you wish. You can ask someone questions about anything and get complete and comprehensive insight on that person’s point of view. You can talk candidly with a loved one who has been dead for a number of years. It will be so real that you will most certainly shy away from certain topics or questions just as you would in real life.

Imagine the power of harnessing an experience like this. What would your life be like if you could look forward to this almost every night? You already have the brain for it which is the only tool that is required. It is all truly within your reach. There are certain things that you can do to slowly program your mind to open itself up and let you take charge.

Lucid Dreaming; In part two we will begin to unlock some of the secrets that will lay the foundation for us to open that door up little by little. This is only the beginning of the journey. Where will you go?

My name is Jonathon Byron. I’m from the heartland of the United States and have a passion for writing and helping people. To view more of my work please visit my web site www.helpmegroup.com

World’s first double arm transplant undertaken in Munich

Saturday, August 2, 2008

A 54-year-old German farmer who lost both arms in a farming accident six years ago has become the first patient to receive a complete double arm transplant. The patient, whose name has not been released, underwent the operation at the Klinikum rechts der Isar, part of the Technical University of Munich (Technische Universität München), last week; he is said to be recovering well.

The operation lasted 15 hours and was performed by a team of 40 specialists in Plastic Surgery, Hand Surgery, Orthopedics and Anesthesiology, under the direction of the head of the Plastics and Hand Surgery department, Prof. Hans-Günther Machens, Dr. Christoph Höhnke (Head of Transplants, Senior Physician; Plastics and Hand Surgery) and Prof. Edgar Biemer, the former Chief of Plastic Surgery at the Clinic.

In a press statement released by the clinic, it was revealed that the patient had been thoroughly physically checked and had psychological counselling prior to the surgery to ensure he was mentally stable enough to cope with the procedure. Since completion of the surgery, the patient has been on immuno-suppressant drugs to prevent rejection of the new limbs.

Following the surgery, the press release from the clinic’s press manager, Dr. Tanja Schmidhofer, included the following statement:

The flow of blood was [re-]started in intervals of 20 minutes because the anaesthetists had to make sure that the patient would not suffer from the blood flowing back from the transplanted parts. No significant swelling was seen, nor indeed any ischemia (lack of blood flow to the tissues). This is a testament to the surgeons who established a fully functioning blood flow…the main nerves, the Musculocutaneus, Radial and Ulnar nerves were all attached and sewn together, and finally an external fixator was applied, with pins in the lower and upper arms, avoiding the risk of pressure points and sores. The operation was successfully completed after 15 hours.

Without the immuno-suppressant drugs given to the patient, the risk of there being a Graft-versus-Host Reaction or GvHR, would have been significant due to the upper arm containing a large amount of bone marrow, consisting of ICC’s or Immuno-Competent Cells, which would have triggered a near total rejection of the new limbs. A GvHR is a condition which results in the cells from the transplant attacking the immune system of the body.

Indications from the clinic suggest that the double attachment went well, although it could be up to 2 full years before the patient is able to move the arms.

The donor arms came from an unnamed teenager, who is believed to have died in a car accident.

Since the United States presidential election in November of 2004, viewership in the 25-54 age bracket of Fox News has fallen from over 1,000,000 in October to under 450,000 in April, according to the Daily Kos, a liberal weblog.

Ratings for cable news stations have fallen globally since the election, but most have since stabilized, making Fox’s continuing decline unusual. CNN’s ratings, as an example, increased 27% in April. Fox still leads CNN in this demographic by nearly 35% however, with CNN only managing to reverse its viewership decline in March 2005.

The FOX News Channel is a US cable and satellite news channel. It is owned by the Fox Entertainment Group, a subsidiary of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation. As of January 2005, it is available to 85 million subscribers in the U.S. and to further viewers internationally, broadcasting primarily out of its New York City studios.

According to the BBC, FOX News’ profits doubled due to “patriotic coverage” of the Iraq conflict, with as much as 300% increase in viewership, with 3.3 million average daily viewers.

The 2004 election coverage by FOX News ranked higher than the next two cable news competitors combined. For President Bush’s address, FOX News rated 7.3 million viewers. NBC, CBS, and ABC rated 5.9, 5.0, and 5.1, respectively.

Fake impotence drugs linked to low blood sugar outbreak

Thursday, February 12, 2009

An article in the February 12 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine reports on an unusual cause for an outbreak of low blood sugar among men in Singapore: illegal use of sexual performance enhancement drugs that were contaminated with a diabetes drug.

Between January and May 2008, 149 men and one woman between 19 and 97 (mean age 51) were admitted to five public hospitals for unexplained low blood sugar. Similar cases were reported in media reports from Hong Kong. Seven Singaporean patients remained in a coma because of prolonged sugar starvation of the brain, and four subsequently died. The diabetes drug glyburide was found in blood and/or urine samples in 85% of cases; 30% admitted having used illegal sexual performance enhancers.

The contaminated products were a counterfeit version of the drug Cialis (meant for the treatment of genuine erectile dysfunction), and three purported herbal preparation (the affected brands included Power 1 Walnut and Santi Bovine Penis Erecting Capsule). All four preparations additionally contained Viagra in varying concentrations. Two herbal products contained traces of the weight loss drug sibutramine, a compound related to amphetamines.

The drug packaging mentioned names of non-existent overseas production facilities, so the source of the contamination with the diabetes drug could not be established.

The authors underline the risks that is known to be associated with purchasing drugs from unreliable providers or from online resellers. The clandestine use of impotence drugs as sexual performance enhancers seems to have provided a good illustration of this problem. They further call for more efforts by national and international health and law enforcement agencies to curb the manufacturing, international transport and sales of untrustworthy medication.
